Snowdrops bring joy to my heart in February
Reader
What are you loving about February? I absolutely LOVE snowdrops. They make my heart sing.
They look like beautiful upside-down white hearts. It's as if Mother Earth knows exactly what we need to lift our hearts. Their innocence is so pure, a ray of hope for spring to come.
Naturally, I'm sensing a heart theme this month. This Friday it's Valentine's Day and World Sound Healing Day so why not attune to the power of your heart?
I’ll never forget the moment I felt it—this undeniable, almost magnetic pull deep within my chest. I was sitting alone in a quiet room, pondering a difficult decision I had been grappling with for weeks. My mind was racing, trying to figure out the “logical” answer, but something felt off. It wasn’t until I took a deep breath, slowed my thoughts, and tuned into the quiet rhythm of my heartbeat that I realized the truth: the answer wasn’t in my head. It was in my heart.
That moment sparked a curiosity I couldn’t ignore. Why did it feel like my heart had a wisdom beyond what my mind could grasp? And why, in so many ancient traditions, was the heart considered the seat of wisdom and intuition?
In recent years, science has uncovered fascinating insights into the role of the heart, thanks in large part to the research by HeartMath Institute. According to their studies, the heart isn’t just a biological organ—it’s a powerhouse of energy and information.

HeartMath’s research reveals that the heart sends out far more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart. In fact, it has been found that the heart can receive and process information from the electromagnetic field around us, influencing our emotions, thoughts, and even our decision-making process. The heart can sense the world around us 5,000 times faster than the brain, creating a profound connection to the environment we often overlook.
But this connection to the heart isn’t new. Long before modern science uncovered these truths, ancient wisdom teachings revered the heart as the wisdom keeper. Sages understood that the heart was the bridge between the physical world and the spirit realm. This is reflected in the chakra energy system.
In many indigenous traditions, the heart is seen as the seat of the soul, a vessel of deep intuition, and a powerful source of inner knowing. Sages would often turn to their heart to gain clarity in moments of uncertainty.
By quieting the mind and tuning into the rhythm of their heartbeats, they could connect with Source and receive messages or guidance for healing. This practice was not just metaphorical. In some traditions, these enlightened beings believed that the heart had its own consciousness, capable of perceiving energies and information from beyond ordinary perception.
Heart Breathing Practice
Like the ancient Sages, you can easily tune into and harness the power of your heart. This practice is adapted from shamanic wisdom teachings and Transformational Presence coaching frameworks.
Close your eyes or lower your gaze and put your hands on your heart area. Paying attention to your breath, noticing the rhythm of your breath but not changing your breath in any way.
Take a deep breath into your heart and hold your breath for a moment until you feel the beating of your heart. Begin to breathe in a slow, rhythmic way. Breathe in for a count of five and breathe out for a count of five. This will have a balancing effect on your system.
With each inhalation, imagine that you are breathing into your heart area and that your heart is expanding. With each exhalation, imagine you are directing your exhalation to the area just above your navel. This is your solar plexus, the third chakra, which is the centre of your self-esteem and personal power.
Do this heart breathing practice for a few minutes. When you finish, look around you. What do you notice about your environment - the colours, the sounds, the smells? What new information are you sensing with your activated heart-mind?

The Oak Tree Cabin Dear Reader, I’ve recently returned to my country of birth, Panama, for the first time since the passing of my dear aunt three years ago. This journey has been one of deep reconnection to my roots, my heritage, and the ancestral stories that shaped the woman I am today. As I listen to tales of how my mother grew up, walk familiar paths with new eyes, and feel the presence of those who came before me, I am reminded of the strength, wisdom, and resilience that flow through...

Reader Motherhood is so much more than a title—it is an energy, a presence, a way of being. We are all mothers in some way. Whether or not we have children, we nurture, protect, and create in countless ways. We are mothers to the Earth, tending to her beauty and receiving her gifts. We are mothers to the animals, offering them care, companionship, and love. We are mothers to the plants, growing and nourishing the world around us. We are mothers to ideas, dreams, and visions, bringing them...
